Pilot fish writes a custom program that performs certain functions on a server every night. “The program dumped its junk data to a file, which was overwritten every time the program ran,” says fish. “I know now this isn’t a good way to do this, but at the time — the early 1990s — it was pretty standard practice.” But a week after the program goes into production, fish is called into the office of the big boss, who demands to know why fish hasn’t documented what to do with that file — the one named DELETE.ME.
